1987 Shelby CSX

Shelby's last offering for 87 would be the CSX. It was based on the then-new Dodge Shadow ES Turbo. As usual, Carroll took it from there.

In the engine bay was yet another Turbo II which had been converted from a Turbo I at Shelby's plant (seen below). This engine was identical to that in the Shelby GLHS cars and it produced the same 175 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. As installed in the CSX it returned performace of 0-60 in 7.0 seconds, ET of 15.4 seconds, and a top speed of 131 mph.

In the suspension department, the stock springs are replaced with high-rate, shortened ones which lower ride height by .75 inch; they are wrapped around Monroe Formula GP shocks/struts. The tubular rear anti-roll bar is replaced by a larger, solid one. The brakes deserve special attention: they are genuine four-wheel discs with the rears (Kelsey-Hayes 10.6" solid discs) adapted from Dodge's Daytona Shelby Z. And finally, Shelby mounts 205/50VR-15 Goodyear Gatorbacks on Shelby Centurion II wheels (slightly different from those on the 87 GLHS), seen below.

Inside decor is very similar to the stock Shadow setup. The only differences are the leather-wrapped Shelby steering wheel, the dash plaque, and the unique boost gauge with blue SHELBY TURBO lettering. Standard equipment included air conditioning, a four-speaker AM/FM cassette radio, special floor mats, full instrumentation, rear defrost, 60/40 split folding rear seat, and more.

Outside, there are many subtle changes. There are unique airdams front and rear along with matching sideskirts. The stock grill is replaced with one featuring a large opening. The only badge placed on the car is a large circular Shelby one in the center of the rear hatch deck lid; there are blue Shelby CSX decals on both doors and on the decklid, a CSX decal on the grill, and a Shelby decal at the top of the windshield.

Only 750 were produced. Each was equipped identically; there were no available options. Selling price was set at $13,495.
