The 87 GLHS was very similar to the 86. Carroll purchased the last 1000 87 Shelby Chargers from Dodge. These has special order paint: completely black with no silver stripe down the middle. Like in the 86, the cars were then converted at Shelby's factory. The suspension was again upgraded with Koni adjustable struts/shocks all around and the alignment was altered slightly. The tires remained 205/50VR-15 Goodyear Gatorbacks, again mounted on Shelby Centurion aluminum wheels.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob were again installed as was the numbered dash plaque and a speedometer sticker overlay which raised the numeric readout to 125 MPH. (Note how the plaque and speedo decal both differ from those used on the 86 GLHS.)
The changes underhood were likewise familiar. The Turbo I pieces were removed and the engines were again converted to intercooled Turbo II specs. (See the 86 GLHS page for specific information.) The horsepower rating remained at 175 as did the torque output of 175 lb-ft from 2200-4800 rpm. The Charger-based 87 GLHS was slightly heavier and also more aerodynamic than the Omni-based 86 GLHS and the 87's performance figures show it: 0-60 in 6.7, an ET of 14.9 at 95mph, and a top speed of 134 MPH.
On the outside things were very similar to the 86 GLHS. Besides the aforementioned black paint was just a small silver tape stripe on the side, a Shelby windshield decal, some other unique name-badge decals, and the larger GLHS decal on the c-pillar.
Here is a comparison picture of a Dodge Shelby Charger and an 87 GLHS to help further illustrate the differences:
All 87 GLHSs were equipped identically. They all featured the sunroof, cassette stereo, center console, rear defroster, air conditioning, stainless steel exhaust, and so on. Curiously they did not have the rear window louver, which was standard on all 87 Dodge Shelby Chargers. (Also, there was no armrest present - apparently this item disappeared for the 87 model year.) There were no available options and the price was $12,995.
